Creating a dispersion effect starts with isolating your subject from the background. For my project, I used an image of a horse. Here’s how you can prepare your image:
Select your subject (in my case, the horse).
Remove the subject from the background.
Duplicate the subject layer as a backup.
This step ensures you have flexibility to experiment while keeping the original image intact.
Step 2: The Secret to the Dispersion Effect
The key to this effect lies in combining layer masks with a brush tool. Unlike more complex methods, like using the Liquify Tool, this approach is straightforward and versatile.
Create a new layer and choose a brush suitable for the effect.
Add a mask to your subject layer and paint on it using the brush.
Adjust the brush size as needed to make the effect realistic.
Pro tip: Experiment with various brush types to find one that matches the look you’re aiming for.
Step 3: Checking the Lighting
Lighting plays a crucial role in making your composition believable. I always check my work in black and white first. If the lighting looks convincing in black and white, it’s likely to work well in color too.
Tip: Add some noise and motion effects to make the image more dynamic and engaging.
Step 4: Color Correction and Grading
Once the composition is complete, focus on refining the colors. Using a mask gives you more control over color application than tools like Liquify. Experiment with color grading to enhance the mood and tone of the image.
